Nakapiripirit Launches Drainage Works To Curb Flooding At Lomorimoir Primary School Under The Local Climate Adaptive Living Facility (Local) Project

Community Development

Nakapiripirit has begun drainage improvement works along Lomorimoir Primary school to address persistent flooding in the school under the Local Climate Adaptive Living Facility (LoCAL) project.

The project, which started in April 2026, involves the construction of an 8oo meter drain to channel water more effectively into away from the school.

According to Nakapiripirit District, Senior Environment Officer Ms. Bako Florence, the project is one of several initiatives under the Local Climate Adaptive Living Facility (LoCAL) aimed at addressing climate change resilience mechanisms, improving livelihood of communities.

Speaking during an inspection of the works the Chief administrative Officer Lokoroi Charles Okwi, said the intervention is part of the district’s broader plan to make institutions more resilient to heavy rains.

“We are working tirelessly to improve the district's infrastructure and mitigate the impact of heavy rains,” he said.

“The recent floods showed how vulnerable this area is. Once completed, these works will improve stormwater flow and reduce the flooding that has been learners every rainy season.”

Ms. Bako noted that Nakapiripirit district has been affected by climate change citing disasters such as droughts, floods, heat waves, storms and wildfires which makes it highly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change.

She said that the program has helped mainstream climate change action plan in the district, she noted that the livelihood of the people is highly dependent on natural resources, which are prone to climate change impacts.

she said that the district has been experiencing increased frequency and severity of extreme weather events manifested in more erratic rainfalls and prolonged dry seasons due to climate variability and change,” he added that due to the high vulnerability levels, the district has prioritized adaptation measures.

During the inspection, the LC V Chairperson Nakapiripirit Hon Lolim Simon Peter thanked government and the Ministry of Local Governments and Finance for the program which he says has increased local climate change awareness and capacities and helped the integration climate change adaptation in the district.

He stated that extreme weather events are increasingly frequent in the district, adding that in recent years, hundreds of people have been affected by droughts, floods, heat waves, storms, landslides and wildfires which have destroyed crops and livelihoods

The district intends to undertake in FY 2025/2026 construction of cooking sheds with improved cook stoves in 3 primary schools, construction of drainage channels to divert overflow from mountain streams and valleys to avoid flooding of farms and households in Aoyalira Village, as well as Lomorimor  primary school, Tree planting and greening of public places and institutions like local government’s administration headquarters, schools and health facilities. And the restoration of degraded wetlands and riverbanks, through tree planting.

The four-year program is implemented by the United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF), with joint funding contributions from the European Union (EU), Belgian cooperation, Sweden, among other development partners.
