About the Education Department

The Education Department in a District Local Government in Uganda is a cornerstone of human development, mandated to oversee and facilitate the provision of quality education and sports services across the district. Headed by the District Education Officer (DEO), the department operates under the guidance of national education policies and the Decentralization framework outlined in the Local Governments Act.

Headed by a District Education Officer Ms Molly Teko (DEO), it manages Universal Primary (UPE) and Secondary (USE) Education initiatives, teacher deployments, school inspections, and infrastructure projects like classrooms and latrines.

Key Functions and Initiatives

The Education and Sports Department is primarily responsible for:

• School Management & Monitoring: Implementing integrated inspection systems to enhance teacher effectiveness and ensure school compliance with national standards.
• Infrastructure Improvement: Overseeing the construction of vital amenities, such as drainable pit latrines and classrooms, to ensure safe learning environments.

• Policy Enforcement: Enforcing local education ordinances—like the Nakapiripirit Local Government to promote child retention in schools and combat harmful cultural practices

The education department is governed by national policies and is generally responsible for:

• Quality Assurance: Conducting routine school inspections and supporting professional development programs for teachers.
• Infrastructure: Overseeing the construction and maintenance of classrooms, VIP pit latrines, and staff housing.
• Examination Support: Facilitating national examinations at the primary and secondary levels (PLE, UCE, UACE) .
• Sports & Co-curricular: Promoting talent development from zonal up to national levels.
